Engineering Sciences Student Show, Day 3 at Shanghai Fashion Week
I stuck around after the Fu Dan University show to meet some of the students backstage and discovered that another student show, this time from the Shanghai University of Engineering Sciences, was up next… After being pleasantly surprised by both Raffles Design Institute and Fu Dan University, I decided to see what this school’s fashion department had to offer.
True to the school’s name, the clothes presented by their students were engineered and futuristic, utilizing LEDs and unconventional materials that pushed the boundaries of fashion. There were very exaggerated shapes and forms, and technology seemed to be the common thread (pun intended). The clothes were not the most commercial, but I like that… I thought it made for a great show, so take a look and let me know what you think!
One thing I admire about young Chinese fashion designers is how unafraid they are of taking risks and being truly creative, even if it doesn’t always “work”. Though political turmoil precluded China from wearing and experiencing first-hand decades of historical mid-century fashions and silhouettes, it has created a by-product in the way of an unrestrained attitude and boldness in design–it’s not bound to the past in a way that necessitates re-invention every ten years (we’ve already cycled through the 70s and 80s in the past 2 years–and now the 20s, 30s and 40s–in the West!). That’s the most exciting thing to me about Chinese fashion today.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment and wonderful insight!! I completely agree with this, and I think China, although perhaps less “developed” in certain ways, is also less restrained in terms of how they think of fashion and wear it. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Chinese fashion industry and street style alike!!
