Qiu Hao not only opened Shanghai Fashion Week but also stepped the game way up with a thoughtful and whimsical interpretation of simplicity. He created a collection that was two dimensional when laid flat, but the looks would fluctuate between 2D and 3D shapes when worn on the human form. The woven and knitted pieces were perfected through their “imperfections”, with fringe hanging off the models that added another dimensionality and gave one the sense of humble handwork and true craftsmanship. It was certainly a ride, envisioning complexity through simplicity and vice versa, but there was no single interpretation. It’s ambiguity gave the collection more meaning, and there were certainly multiple layers beneath the physical clothes. Although professed to be “simple”, this collection was anything but… Qiu Hao struck a balance between commercial and conceptual, creating aspiration but also resonance. It fluctuated between “high” and “low”, but it was ultimately a return to one’s roots. The brand has found its stride by establishing a solid foundation, and it will certainly be exciting to see what his next steps will be. Qiu Hao is definitely one to watch.
